“The sun never sets on Bandra” is the wayfinding that Barrett and Welsh designed for the public plaza attached to Bandra Station. A World Heritage Site, this is one of India’s most famous heritage commuter rail stations and the gateway to Mumbai’s Bandra West, “The Queen of The Suburbs.”  TimeOut rated Bandra as one of the top 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2020, for good reason. People come to Bandra to shop, eat, hang out (it has the highest density of pubs, bars, clubs and lounges in India), study (it boasts at least 16 higher education institutions), and gawk at its Bollywood star residents in their palatial homes.

However, the plaza outside Bandra West’s commuter rail station was chaotic. There was very little wayfinding to direct commuters toward key services, amenities, or onward transportation. We worked closely with Mumbai’s SDM Architects, the firm designing the revitalized plaza, to bring order to this space.

Friends, lovers and families have always gathered to walk Bandra’s seafront promenades, silhouetted against the Arabian Sea’s spectacular sunsets. “The sun never sets on Bandra” silhouetted transportation icons against that setting sun. The new signs orient commuters, enabling them to navigate confidently through the plaza and from one mode of transport to another. Bus stops display the stop names, route numbers and final destinations in English, Marathi and Hindi. And in a first for Mumbai’s BEST bus system, they even displayed route maps with custom icons for local landmarks. The result: distinct, consistent, commuter-centred wayfinding that represents Bandra’s most emblematic experience on every sign.
